CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara Review Update: After A Week, Am I Still In Love?

Recently, I shared my first impressions of CoverGirl Clump Crusher Mascara. I promised that I'd be using the mascara for a week and I'd come back with an update.

Here's the update: I still love this mascara. I was at the store the other day and was sooo close to buying another one. I don't know why, I have 4 already. I had to remind myself that CoverGirl will make more, there's no need to hoard all of the mascara in the Ann Arbor area.

I thought I'd share a few pictures of the mascara from the last week. To the right you can see the mascara with 2 coats, which is what I usually wear when using 1 mascara. The volume is good, though not crazy. The mascara does a good job of pulling the lashes apart, and it gives a nice natural look. Like you just naturally have great lashes, rather than "Hey, look at me, I'm wearing lots of volumizing mascara."

The mascara does last all day on my lashes, and I have no smudging, flaking or loss of curl at the end of the day. I do think that it's easy to remove (even when you are testing out the 30 coat claim, in which case you'll need only 1 extra cotton round).



Here are a few more pictures of my lashes with 30 coats. Definitely thick, but notice there aren't any big clumps and the lashes are surprisingly well separated for wearing over 2 weeks of mascara at the same time!

Finally, I made a little video showing the 30 coats being applied all at once. I did this all in 1 take (hence, I do have a few little flubs). I don't often make videos, so be kind!


I'm excited to start layering this mascara with pretty much every mascara in my giant drawer of mascaras. Have you picked it up yet?

CoverGirl LashBlast's New Clump Crusher: The End of Clumps Forever?

Have you grown tired of my continual discussion of CoverGirl LashBlast yet? I probably mention it at least once a week. So, you can imagine that I was a *bit* beyond excited when I found out that a new formula was coming out, LashBlast Clump Crusher.

Then CoverGirl asked if they could send it to me a bit early so I could play with it more and show you how it worked, and I practically screamed "YES" into the phone! So, this is just a little long intro post. I'll be using this formula for the next week and I'll update you at the end. But, I believe you'll be hearing a lot about Clump Crusher for now on. (Even though CoverGirl sent me a few tubes, I fully admit that I picked up another one when I saw an early display yesterday at my Walmart. I could not help myself.)

This is why I was so excited. I've shared my love of layering mascaras to get a better effect, and I use CG LashBlast Fusion as my top mascara. In large part, this is because it does such a great job of getting rid of any clumps or spidery lashes any other formulas leave behind. On its own, Fusion gives me great length and volume. But, if there was a formula that was truly clump free and pretty much guaranteed that I'd never have to break out my metal lash comb again? I'd be in beauty blogger heaven.

So, what exactly makes this stuff different than the CoverGirl LashBlast that I already love? First, you can tell there's a difference in formula. It's hard to describe unless you have 2 tubes in front of you and you're playing with them, but the Fusion formula is a bit... wetter? The Clump Crusher isn't necessarily drier, but it is a tad thicker, less wet and there is definitely less of it on the brush. When the Clump Crusher is pulled out of the tube, you can hear the tube swiping off the excess. (Click to enlarge the pic to the right.) You can see that when the brush comes out there is no excess on that wand. There's a tiny bit of mascara at the very end, and that was the most I could get to come out (I may have tried it a few times...). The lack of excess product all over the wand is a huge reason for no clumps. It also saves me the step of wiping my wand with a tissue.

Here's a closer look at the wand, it's definitely easier to see before it goes in the tube. The bristles are the molded plastic that I love from other LashBlast products. While still pointy, they are a bit shorter, and you can see that the bristles are slightly different lengths. The brush itself does have a curve, and that is a bit accentuated by the different lengths of bristles. They fit around the curve of your eye grabbing each lash easily, but if you miss a spot you can just turn the brush around and let the curve grab that spot. These bristles do a great job of getting between lashes and pulling them apart without you having to do anything different. I love that they're close together, but not so close that I don't feel like they get between lashes.

Finally, the Pièce de résistance. CoverGirl told me that the mascara could do 30 swipes without clumps. Which I misinterpreted as 30 coats. (And if you're like me, each coat is about 5-7 swipes, easy.) So, I did it yesterday. And really, while it is a tad thick near the outer edge (which is where I concentrate my mascara), you can see that it really is clump free, despite my massive misinterpretation. (Also, I applied this straight out of the tube, no wand wiping, and there was no use of an eye lash comb!) It looked the same at the end of the day, no smudges or flakes in sight and my lashes were still curled. This much mascara wasn't actually very hard to remove. I used my usual eye makeup remover, but I used 3 cotton rounds for both eyes instead of my usual 2 cotton rounds.


Clump Crusher is set to hit select stores November 1st and nationwide January 2013. There are some stores that it's already on display in (like my Walmart), and if you're a lucky girl like me, grab a tube!
